This is the bit where I show my appreciation of Mr Graham 'Guitar' Coxon.
I 'borrowed' this picture from an issue of Select. Obviously they don't know this... so on the possibility anyone from select see's this: Please don't kill me!
I like to think of Graham Coxon as a little Idol of mine. Not only is he an amazing guitarist (with other musical talents to boot) but he's also a pretty smart artist and seems a sweet guy too.
So, you ask "Why, mate, are you such a fan of this random guitarist?"
And I will say first of I will say this: Graham Coxon is not just any random guitarist. He is an artist in his own right with two solo albums to his name. The second of these is being released this summer. Yay! Also he is one of the coolest rockstars out there. Considered even so by those who are not fans of the band. For instance last summer, a guy I know said "Blur are crap, they should be killed" Naturally I had to disagree... But if another guy, who was a big heavy metal fan and SO not a blur fan, said "Except Graham Coxon, cos he's cool" Hooray I thought, not having time to disagree yet, I could only add "Exactly, YOU CAN'T KILL GRAHAM!" Anyway I think that little bit of story sums my point up...
Then I'll tell you how I got to like him so much. When I first became a blur fan , naturally you like Damon Albarn, he's the dominating memeber of the band as far as public stuff goes.
Then I noticed that the bassist is very good looking, and there's no denying that. Alex James IS one of the best looking chaps in the rock world. So I get a bit of an Alex fixation.
Meanwhile your listening to the albums. And you ALWAYS thought the guitars were great right? But thats just part of the song.
Then suddenly 'blur' becomes by far my favourite album. And its that album which is CONSTANTLY refered to as 'Graham's Album' so it seems obvious he's the coolest in the band as far as music goes.
Then. as I was reading interviews and looking at quotes and stuff Alex and Damon seem a bit, well up thier own arses. Only a tiny bit, but it puts you off. However Graham comes of well in his interviews: a nice chap, funny, intelligent, unassuming and cute To put it mildly actually, he comes across so adorable it could make you sick, or develope a massive crush on him Which I did for a couple of months until I realised this wasn't the respectable way for a fan of Graham's to act.
I found out he was an artist too. And, because I like to consider myself a bit of an artist too, this obviously apealed to me. Even more because his paintings and drawign are really (and I do mean really) great.
Him and Damon, were also the wierd kids at school and, when they couldn't avoid it, got picked on by the lads. Now I don't know about you but I always like the cute little kids that are bullied at school. Makes you go 'Aww'. So then, because he'd firmly established hiself as my favourite guitarist, artist and just general favuorite famous guy, I started liking really silly things about him. Like the fact he has A big nose and small ears. Bless.
Also, on a more shallow note, he has cool glasses, funky hair and cool dress sense. Which is a bonus in an icon.
I don't want to get into the trap of thinking however "Graham Coxen is the greatest person that ever lived" because I've never met him. For all I know he could be a complete self absorbed bastard, and this sweet and innocent thing is just a cover. Let's hope not though. The point is, that everyonme has thier bad points, but as this is a dedication to graham I shall bypass these completely, focusing on his goof points.
Expect to see a biography and a transcript of is radio one interview here soon. Meanwhile why don't you go and have a peek at the picture I scribbled of him in my artworksection? Oh go on, you know you wan't to... Also here is the review of his new album 'The Golden D'
so make sure you check that out. Although it is rather long i'm afaraid. I get carried away by nthese things....
